Polyester came into existence as a raw material in the carpet industry around the mid-1960s. There are basically three steps in the production of handwoven polyester carpets. The first step is tufting, which begins by weaving the synthetic fibre into a primary backing material. The backing acts as a foundation that holds the yarn in place during tufting. There are no exposed yarn tips, and only the sides of the yarn are exposed to wear and tear. The second step is dying. There are two primary dyeing processes, pre-dyeing, i.e., dyeing before tufting and carpet dyeing, which involves dyeing the rug after tufting is done.
